The Power of Choice
There have been days when I feel like I am standing in a room that has a thousand doors, each one representing a choice I could make. Sometimes life is like this, whether it be at work, in my career and especially in life outside of work. Nowadays we can’t even order dinner without being presented with a seemingly never ending plethora of choices. While having choices is wonderful, having too many choices can be overwhelming. All of a sudden we find ourselves standing in that room with a thousand doors, and overwhelmed with this reality we find ourselves paralyzed, not knowing which door to take and which choice to make.
In my work here at the hospital I often connect with individuals who feel overwhelmed with the choices that they have to make, some of which will certainly be life changing for them. In those moments that sense of paralysis is almost palpable. Whether they be patients or staff, we all inevitably come to that place where even if the choice is as simple as a yes or no, the decision to make that choice is extremely difficult.
Yet, beyond the fear and indecision, beyond the palpable sense of being paralyzed, what has been by far the most astounding to me is the change I see in those individuals who choose to stop standing and walk through a door, and make a choice. There is something deeply profound about exercising our personal autonomy and making the choices that will bring about change in our lives. I have often been stunned by a sense of resolute calm that I have experienced in those who have struggled deeply with a decision and then made a choice. The simple truth is that we often do not know what lies beyond the door until we walk through it. This is the power of choice and exercising it will change our lives, bringing about new opportunities we never even dreamed possible.
