Cuba!!!
As a result of a very spontaneous and last minute decision made on the 8th of February, Josh and I just got back from a week in Cuba!!! It was such a nice week, full of relaxation and sun. We flew out of Person airport on the 15th after Jen dropped us off (thanks so much Jen!!). The new terminal is really nice, but 3 hours early was a little too early – especially when our flight got delayed about an hour. But we arrived in Cuba after a wonderful flight – they served champagne after take off, we had a full hot dinner served with wine, snack and drinks. Once in Cuba we were bussed to our resort “Club Bucanero” which is located in the middle of nowhere in Santiago De Cuba. The resort had been destroyed in a hurricane two years ago and had just somewhat recently reopened. You could still see some remains of destruction here and there, but the had done a wonderful job at rebuilding. The Resort was located on the shore of the ocean, with about a 10-15 foot stone cliff dropping into the ocean. And behind the resort was the foot of the mountains (seen as a cliff face). Some of the highlights of our trip include the hike we took up the mountain one morning – we literally climbed up the face of the cliff, walked along it then climbed back down. We also got to go snorkeling for the first time ever. On our resort was a little cove with a sandy beach at the one end and inside that cove was amazing coral and fish. We saw lots of Dori’s and some Nemo’s and rainbow coloured fish and we even saw one of those things that flutters at the very bottom parallel to the ground. There were also tones of urchins, especially near the shore where we had to get in and out, making getting in and out a rather fear filled event. We also took a double kayak out one morning and paddled up and down the coastline. We also took a bike ride with two other couples to the local beach, and allowed us to see some of the poverty of the country. And of course we spent hours just lying in the sun around the pool and on the beach (of course those hours also included reading my school books). Over all, it was a really enjoyable vacation, and I’d recommend it to anyone!!!
